Hip Pain Symptoms
Hip pain is one of the most common reasons to see a doctor. Although disk herniations and pinched nerves may cause pain referred into the hip, there are other causes originating from the hip itself. Pressure over the greater trochanter may cause a bursitis (inflammation of a fluid sac). Arthritis in the hip joint and tendinitis due to overused and strained muscles are additional causes of pain.
A good history and comprehensive physical exam are important to identify and treat the source of pain.

Disc Pain
Disc pain may occur when a patient has a symptomatic degenerated disc (one that causes neck, mid or low back pain or other symptoms). It is the disc itself that is painful and is the source of pain. This type of pain is typically called axial pain.

Herniated Disk
Herniated disks may cause headache, neck, arm, mid-back, chest wall, low back or leg pain, sciatica and/or numbness. Usually patients will not need surgery for herniated disks.
